6 Ways to Keep Track of Your Child's Progress

A common question we receive from parents is how they can stay up to date on their child’s progress at RSM.

The academic year moves quickly, and we want to ensure that parents have opportunities to stay connected with their child’s learning goals. These tips will help you to get the most out of your experience with RSM and stay informed about your child’s mathematical progress.

1. Your teacher is your greatest resource.

Stay in touch with your child’s teacher. The best way to contact them is through email, and you should have (or will soon be receiving) an introductory email from your child’s teacher. RSM teachers are always available for meetings with parents. If you have concerns or just want to know how your child is doing in the classroom, don’t hesitate to contact them and set up an appointment. You can also take advantage of organic drop-by’s in the 10 minutes before or after your child’s class.

2. Talk to your child’s teacher about classroom specifics.

As a parent, you have a unique insight into your child’s learning preferences. Does your child learn best in the front row? Do they concentrate better with a friend next to them, or should we make sure to separate them? Our teachers typically see their students once a week, so it can take some time to learn the nuances of each child. You can help accelerate this process by sharing the specifics of your child’s learning needs with their teacher.

3. Stay open to your teacher’s suggestions.

Children sometimes behave differently in the classroom than at home. Your child's teacher might have a different perspective of your child’s behavior and nuances and may make some suggestions in terms of what they need to be successful in the classroom. Keep an open mind when it comes to this information from your teacher.

4. Stay informed about the resources available to you at your branch.

All branches have a principal who is, first and foremost, an expert teacher who has experienced hundreds of students. Some branches also have Vice Principals and Deans of Students, all of whom are there to answer your questions and offer suggestions. Talk to your branch principal to learn more about the resources that are available to assist you.

5. Learn About RSM’s Philosophy.

What we do at RSM is unique. We are more than an after-school math program. Over twenty-five years of development has gone into our curriculum, approach, and methodology. Our principals have had the benefit of guiding hundreds of students from elementary school to high school. Principal meetings are a great venue to learn more about our program in depth and the benefits your child can gain from additional math education. Contact your local branch to set up a meeting with the principal.

6. Follow your child’s progress through their homework.

The best way to do so is to review the results of your child’s homework. It will give you a quick sense of what your child is catching on to quickly, and what they might be struggling with. If your teacher spots any long-term challenges, they will contact you.

Additionally, RSM also offers an online Student Portal for students in grades 4-12, a powerful platform that supports the mastery of complex math problems, without relying on multiple-choice drills. Our goal was to use homework to enhance the road to deep understanding. This digital tool does not replace written homework. Students are still required to solve problems on paper and clearly show their thinking. Talk with your local branch about how to get started with RSM’s Student Portal today.

We hope these six tips will allow you to remain informed and in the know about your child's progress at RSM. As always, if you have any questions or want to learn more, please feel free to contact your local branch and set up a meeting with the principal or your child's teacher.
